At Williamstown North Primary School, we explore the core Victorian Curriculum strands of Number & Algebra, Measurement & Geometry and Statistics & Probability.
There is a fundamental emphasis on integrating numeracy into everyday life situations and deepening the understandings of our students.
Our school emphasises the importance of deepening the proficiency in mathematics by allowing students to develop their problem solving and reasoning skills. By embedding these practices in problem solving we challenge our students to think critically and understand that a variety of strategies can be used to address a problem.
At Williamstown North Primary School our instructional model is consistently implemented across all F-6 classrooms. In Numeracy, daily lessons develop student outcomes through learning intentions and success criteria, explicit teaching and modelling and differentiation of tasks to challenge learners at all levels. We develop and use proficiency scales to address point of need and set goals for students to achieve the next level in the numeracy learning.
We develop problem solvers. We understand that students think differently and encourage exploration in mathematics through a range of strategies.
We teach children, through high quality daily instruction in mathematics. We present, opportunities that enable the exploration of maths as an accessible and engaging pathway, with links to our everyday lives.
We teach children to identify the ‘Big Ideas”. We lay the foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, as well as an appreciation, sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject of mathematics.
We teach children through new experiences. We provided opportunities for reflection, implementing a structure to investigate and solve routine and non-routine problems across all areas of mathematics, building on ideas which they will have met already.
We teach children to become confident and skilled in communicating mathematically. We promote the sharing of thoughts and ideas, gaining new insights through asking questions and explaining our thinking.
