Assistant Principal’s Report

PT Conferences

Thank you to parents and students who attended their PT Conference on Monday and Wednesday this week. Also thank you to the staff for facilitating the individual conferences on these evenings.

Again, the feedback from parents about the students mid-year reports has been extremely positive which is very pleasing to hear.

Staff Training Day

A reminder to all parent/carers that students are not required to attend school on Monday 7th August as staff will be on site for professional learning.

OSHClub is offering a program on this day for parents requiring child care. If you would like to access this, please contact OSHClub and register your child or children.

Cooler Weather

As we are experiencing a rather cold snap can you please ensure your child/ren are suitable dressed when they come to school.

A reminder that all students must be in school uniform/colours. We are seeing an increase in the number of our senior students wearing windcheaters associated with various sporting clubs etc. These are not to be worn to school. When out in the playground during the breaks, students are permitted to wear winter coasts/jackets that are not school uniform, however they are not to be worn inside the classroom. The school beanie has been very popular on chilly days and these do help to keep the heat in.

Year 3 & 4 Camp

The notices have been sent to the families of students in Year 3 & 4, which will be held in the week beginning Monday 14th August.

The students are very excited about camp and are really looking forward to attending and participating in many activities.

Enrolment for 2024

The school is in the process of finalising the Foundation Enrolments for 2024. If your child hasn’t been enrolled for 2024, can you please provide the school with complete documentation of the enrolment process by the 28th July.

Calling All Green Thumbs

The school has been lucky enough to secure a grant of 200 trees from ResourcesSmart Schools. On Saturday 5th August we will endeavour to plant out all of these trees. However, we will need assistance from the school community. If you have a couple of hours to spare and would like to volunteer your time to assist planting out these trees, please send an email to Belinda stating who will be onsite, your availability and what tools you will be able to bring with you e.g. wheelbarrow, broom, spade etc. Belinda.gill@education.vic.gov.au

We will endeavour to start at 9.00am and finish around 1.00pm. We do have a parent who will coordinate the planting schedule. Thank you in advance.

Have an enjoyable week.

Book Week Celebrations

CBCA Book Week is coming! This year’s book week will run from Monday, 21st August to Friday 25th August (Week 7). This year’s theme is ‘Read, Grow, Inspire'.

There will be many fun activities for students to participate in across the week, including a Masked Reader competition, buddy reads, book clubs, whole school shared reads, quizzes and a book fair!

On Friday, 25th August, at 9:30am, there’ll be a costume parade where students will be encouraged to dress up as one of their favourite book characters.

The parade will be held at 9:30am on Tasmania (weather permitting), and families are more than welcome to come along and watch the celebration.

We’d love students to bring along the book that inspired their costume, to share with their class throughout the day.

We also have a special evening called 'Reading and Writing Together is Magic'. On this evening, we celebrate students' reading and writing by giving them a genuine audience to present to. Students across the school are invited to present a piece of poetry they've created, edited and published, to a small group of students and families from across the school.

RWTIM is optional but we do encourage all students to participate, as it truly is a wonderful evening! RWTIM will take place on Wednesday, 23rd August from 5.45pm. Further information on the event and instructions on how to book in your child, will be sent out via Compass in the coming weeks.

What’s happening in Visual Arts?

In Foundation, Year One and Two

We are discussing the theme around NAIDOC week. We will be talking about and drawing themed art pieces about our Elders or older adults in our lives.

Foundation - We will create an art piece about an older adult teaching us something special. We will discuss what Indigenous elders may teach their peoples.

Year One - We will compare/contrast and create an art piece about what an Indigenous Elder may teach their people and what an older adult has taught us.

Year Two - We will be thinking about dreamtime stories that elders have passed down to their people and compare that to a story an older adult has told us. We will create an art piece depicting both stories.

Years Three to Six

We will continue our colourful journey with the fabulous Henri Matisse and his wonderful cut-outs. Collages will be continued, and organic shapes experimented with, stuck together, and appreciated, whilst using just a pair of scissors.

Year Three- We will finish our shape collage and add an organic shape as seen in the jazz series of artwork by Matisse. This shape will represent the human figure.

Year Four- We will continue to layer and arrange shapes on a page and research Matisse and his Snow Flower cut out collage. We will take note of his background shapes and create a similar checkerboard effect in our artwork and add some contrasting shapes on top of this space.

Year Five- We will turn our cool coloured organic shapes into hanging mobiles without the use of sticky tape. We will plan our mobiles in our visual arts diaries and complete our project with string and wire.

Year Six- It’s time to turn our organic shapes into hanging art sculptures. We will use the paper Mache technique to glue our shapes to a balloon and wait for it to dry. We will behold a hanging sculpture when we pop our balloon and hang it from the netting.

We are delighted to share with you the outstanding success of our recent Showcase, with the vibrant theme of: ‘Tropical Beach Holiday’. Our talented students from years: FH, FZ, 1N, 1/2B, 2H, 2I, 3M and 3VH, demonstrated their exceptional performance abilities on stage, and their energy and enthusiasm was truly infectious as they transported the audience to a world of sunshine, beaches, and tropical rhythms.

The success of this Showcase would not have been possible without the support of our classroom teachers and helpful staff, and the wonderful parents and guardians who assisted with costuming. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to everyone involved. We are very much looking forward to preparing students in years: FC, FB, 1M, 1FT, 2F, 2P, 3W, 3P, for their Showcase performance held later in Term 4. Performing Arts teachers: Michelle Barnes and Laura Pearce.

State Cross Country:

Congratulations to Bonnie M from Year Six, who participated in the State Cross Country Event on Thursday 13th July, where she successfully won the Championship!

As a result Bonnie has been selected to represent herself and our school as part of the State Victorian Team. She will compete in the National Championships in Canberra at the end of August.

An outstanding achievement for Bonnie who continues to represent herself and our school very proudly. Well done and best of luck to Bonnie at Nationals!

Divisional Football (AFL):

Well done to both of our Football Teams who participated in the Divisional Event on Friday 14th July. Our Girls Football Team smashed their way to a Regional final with a 38 point win (38-0) against Lumen Christi. Our Boys team won their way to Regional finals as well with a 12-6 and 29-8 win over Queen of Peace and Lumen Christi. Both teams will now play in their Regional finals in a big day of footy on 1st August.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB

Our school participates in Scholastic Book Club. Up to twice a term, during the school year, a Club catalogue will be sent home with a different selection of books offered for all ages.

You’ll find award-winning books and bestsellers, as well as old and new favourites. The books span a wide range of children’s reading levels and interests (some books cost as little as $2).

It is easy to order. The Book Club LOOP platform for parents allows you to pay by credit card. Your child’s order is submitted directly to school safe and sound and the books will be delivered to class. You can place your child’s order at scholastic.com.au/LOOP or using the LOOP app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.

Book Club is cashless and paperless, orders are to be lodged only through LOOP. Order forms are not required to be sent to school.

If assistance is required, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Each order helps earn free books and teaching materials for our classroom, however there is never any obligation to order.

Sincerely, Sue Smith, Organizer, Resource Centre

Our Echuca Camp Adventure 2023

Last Term In Week 7, the Year 6 students had a wonderful time in Echuca. Our adventure began by being stuck in traffic in Spotswood for an hour, but once we were off Melbourne Road the excitement started to build. We were lucky enough to have two nights at the Billabong Ranch. During our stay the students experienced a wide variety of onsite activities such as camel rides, bouldering and archery. We also visited the Town Centre where we had some robotic fun at the TwistEd Science centre and a paddle steamer cruise on the mighty Murray. We made lots of memories in 3 days and had fun with friends for our final camp experience at Willy North. Here are our reflections…
