NAPLAN

Our Year 3 and Year 5 students are currently participating in the National Assessment Program—Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).

NAPLAN tests area one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process and does not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance. NAPLAN assessments are an annual nationwide measures that cover the domains of Reading, Writing, Conventions of Language (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation), as well as Numeracy.

Working Bee—Saturday 18th March

Thank you to the ‘families’ that have already volunteered their time for Saturday, however, help is needed for a few hours this coming Saturday to tidy up/sort out the shed and get rid of unwanted/broken items and also to relocate Literacy resources from the Library/Resource Centre to Room 33.

The relocation of the Literacy resources will enable us to provide more space for children to access in the Library when looking for books to borrow/read.

Having a greater space in the Library will also enable us to open the Library at recess and lunch breaks for our students that prefer ‘placid’ breaktime.

Any amount of time you can donate will be most appreciated. Please RSVP Belinda (Belinda.gill@education.vic.gov.au). Dean Pearce will be onsite on Saturday to coordinate work in the shed and relocating of the Literacy resources.

wb

Thank you to the number of families that RSVP already.

If you are attending and have tools that you can bring with you e.g. drill, screw drivers etc. that would be helpful.

If you haven’t RSVP and on Saturday you don’t have anything on and can spare an hour or two, just come to the staff car park in Station Road (which is where the shed is located), Dean Pearce will be onsite to assist with the jobs that need to be done.

2024 Enrolments

As of the start of Term Two, Monday 24th April we will be taking Foundation enrolments for 2024. Enrolment forms can be located on the school website or available from the school’s general office.

Once you have lodged an enrolment for your child/ren from the commencement of Term 2, the enrolment/s are automatically accepted and will be confirmed with a follow up email.

Whole School Photo Day—Thursday 23rd March

All details about ordering photos is on Compass and a schedule for class photos is included in this week’s Newsletter. Please log into Compass and order the school photo pack that you prefer. School Grounds

A reminder to families that the school gates are now unlocked on the weekends and after school hours enabling our students, families and local community members access to the school grounds at these times. We ask students and families to be vigilant with taking bicycles and belongings home from the school yard during these times. Unfortunately we had a bicycle vandalised over the long weekend which is very disappointing.

Enjoy the rest of your week

Wendy Emin—Assistant Principal

Dogs

If you are walking your dog to school, please don’t tether your dog directly at the exit gates. A number of students are scared of dogs and some are allergic to them. Dogs are also not allowed on school grounds.

Hobsons Bay Council Meeting!

Hello, Williamstown North Primary School! We are Pippa and Lucinda from 5B as well as Leo and Sienna from 3VH and we have just been to a JSC meeting at the Hobsons Bay Council's Chambers in Altona. We also went with a teacher Ms Julie. When we arrived and got off the bus we introduced ourselves to the other JSC representatives from other local schools. We then had a quick look around and then went inside and took a seat.

We met a counsellor called Cr Jonathon Mardsen who was filling in for Mayor Antoinette (Tony) Briffa. He told us about his job as a Counsellor for Hobsons Bay, then he then explained how the meeting would go.

After that, a chosen representative from each school (Pippa 5B) read out the upcoming events from our school. We then discussed these.

Next the representatives read a concern/issue that they had identified (with the contributions of other JSC representatives) about something that could be addressed around Hobsons Bay.

Our school wrote that we wanted more statues of women who had impacted on Hobsons Bay history, especially one of Joan Kirner. This could be placed at the front of the Williamstown Town Hall and one of Lynne Kosky (who used to be a parent at WNPS), at the Cherry Lake Playground.

After the meeting finished we had a quick snack and got on the bus to return back to school.

We have got to say, this trip and experience was amazing!

SCHOOL CAPTAINS

Hello Everyone! School Captains here…. Just a few messages and reminders:

We have had a very successful start to the term and are looking forward to the year ahead.

Unfortunately, there have been many students who have forgotten to bring and wear their SunSmart hats.

Could parents/guardians please ensure their children have a SunSmart hat every day.

Last week, we had our first Cultural Diversity Day. All the students put in an amazing effort to dress up for it. However, there were only a few parents who dressed up. We want to change that, so next time the students dress up and do a parade (e.g. book week parade), we want you, as the parents, to dress up too!

A message from the Year 2 Leader Miss Petty:

The Year 1s and 2s have had a fantastic start to swimming! We have learned about our School Value, Responsibility, whilst on our excursion to the pool and doing our swimming lessons. The Year 1 and 2 students have been learning about water safety for their health and safety Shared Inquiry unit. They have made great connections whilst doing their swim program.

Last week, we had the Year 3-6 Athletics Day on Monday and Tuesday, and they were fantastic! We gave out awards for best dressed, cleanest area and loudest house cheer. It truly was a fantastic event packed with fun and friendly competition! Mr. Manoleras has given us an insight on how the Year 6 students helped out: The Year 6 Sport and School Captains did an amazing job helping with the Year 3 - 4 cohort! There has been amazing feedback from teachers and parents. Thank you to everyone who participated, and well done to all.

It has really been an amazing start to the term

Regards, the School Captains; Allegra, David, Lucas
